What’s happening to our honey bees?
Our nations’ honeybee population has drastically dropped in the past few years. It’s called colony collapse disorder (CCD), and has taken the lives of billions of our honeybees. Why should we be worried? The honey bee is one of the most beneficial insects in the world. There have been estimates that up to 1/3 of everything we eat depend on honeybee pollination. Without bees, we would be eating mostly rice, corn and wheat instead of the array of vegetables and fruits that we enjoy everyday.
Why is this happening?
There is no clear answer as to why the bees are dying, but a prime suspect is the widespread use of pesticides and herbicides. Scientists have discovered pesticides in the bees. It has been seen in their blood, wax and pollen. These chemicals are thought to be detrimental to bee health. The honey bees are an essential part to our ecosystem and vital to the production of our food and other agriculture goods.
How can we help protect the bees?
Organic gardening and farming is beneficial to bees. By keeping your yard and garden chemical-free you’ll be positively contributing to the bee population in your neighborhood. Choose organic foods at the grocery store and farmer’s markets, you’ll be showing your support for agriculture and farmers that is not only good for your body, but also the bees.
