Bisphenol A (BPA)

Bisphenol A, also known as BPA, is an industrial chemical used to make polycarbonate plastic resins, epoxy resins and other products. BPA is what makes plastic hard and shatterproof. The chemical is used to line cans and is found in water bottles and baby bottles, as well as consumer products like CDs, electronic equipment, sports safety equipment and many other products.

BPA has been suspected of being hazardous to humans since the 1930s. Recent studies have linked BPA to many adverse health effects in mice and rats at doses that overlap typical human exposures. These effects include early puberty, breast cancer, diabetes, and low sperm count.

BPA is used in some plastic baby bottles and sippy cups, as well as in the lining of infant formula cans. Because of this, millions of babies and toddlers are exposed to BPA on a daily basis through their baby bottles, formula and baby food.

Protect Your Baby! Bottle and Formula Guide:

  • Use clear silicone nipples.  Latex rubber nipples can cause allergic reactions and may contain impurities linked to cancer.

  • Use glass bottles. Plastic bottles can leach BPA into the formula or breast milk. Stay away from hard, clear plastic bottles marked with a 7 or PC.

  • Don’t use plastic bottle liners. The liners (especially when heated) may leach chemicals into the breast milk or formula.

  • Use filtered tap water. If you choose bottles water, make sure it’s fluoride-free.

  • Choose powdered formula. BPA can leach into liquid formula sold in metal cans.

  • Warm bottles in a pan of hot water. Using a microwave can heat unevenly and cause chemicals to leach from plastic bottles into the formula.
